Michigan Community Service Commission 

Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks to help support and welcome individuals and families to the United States.  Volunteers will assist at various stages of the transition of moving to Michigan.  The Michigan Community Service Commission is currently registering potential volunteers to assist the organizations that will support the evacuees as they arrive in Michigan. 

Some volunteer needs identified include: 

Healthcare Providers Certified Interpretation or Translation Food Distribution Healthcare Coordination Community Support Liaison Education Tutor and or Mentor Education Liaison Financial Literacy Data Support (Virtual) Agency Support (some virtual) Process Donations of Goods Warehouse Management

Before beginning service all volunteers will need to undergo a background screening through the Internet Criminal History Access Tool (ICHAT), Michigan and National Sex Offender Registries, and the Central Registry.

The Michigan Community Service Commission would like to partner with groups that can provide funds and large quantities of much needed items to resettlement agencies statewide.  Various donations are needed to help support and welcome individuals and families to the United States.  Please consider donating from the list below:

Bethany Christian Services - Supporting Refugees Upon Arrival

Bethany Christian Services is a global nonprofit that supports children and families with social services, all designed to help families thrive. As part of this work, the organization  protects, advocates for, and supports refugees. They are offering resettlement and support services for the Afghan refugees in two communities - Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo

St. Vincent Catholic Charities is the designated refugee resettlement agency for adults and families in Lansing and mid-Michigan.  Through a federal government program, our Refugee Services assist with the basic essentials to welcome refugees to the Lansing community and help them reach self-sufficiency.

US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) has resettled over 350,000 refugees from around the world in communities across the U.S.

USCRI  helps refugees and other newcomers achieve self-sufficiency and become contributing members of American society. Your gift will provide urgently-needed assistance to Afghan refugees and their families as they rebuild their lives in the United States.

Jewish Family Services of Washtenaw County has been resettling Special Immigrant Visa holders (SIV’s), and we are ready and waiting to receive arrivals. We have worked hard to resettle refugees and SIV cases for over 28 years to help them rebuild their lives in their new country. The urgency and critical nature of this work is at a level that we have not seen before. However, we are prepared to receive anyone referred to Washtenaw County by the U.S. State Department as part of our national response to this and other humanitarian crises around the world. We are grateful to our community for their continued support and partnership in welcoming refugees and SIV’s.
