Approximately 1,300 Afghan allies and nationals are expected to be resettled in Michigan in the coming months. They will be assigned to one of the resettlement agencies who have the expertise to offer support. The Michigan Community Service Commission is supporting organizations serving Afghan evacuees by identifying volunteer roles and donations to ease the transition for these individuals and families.
We are appreciative of the many Michiganders who want to offer support as a volunteer or by donating items and much needed funding for the Michigan Afghan Resettlement initiative.
The process is an evolving situation, and it is expected that needs will change over time. There are three main regions in the state where volunteers and donations will be needed to support the agencies involved - West, Central and Southeast Michigan. There will also be opportunities to serve from any location.
Before beginning service all volunteers will need to undergo a background screening through the Internet Criminal History Access Tool (ICHAT), Michigan and National Sex Offender Registries, and the Central Registry.
